Wiring

To get electricity to the electrical components, we need a conductor of some kind.  Conductors allow electricity to pass through.

One of the best materials at conducting electricity is copper (although aluminum works just as well)

There are two main types of wire:

SOLID CORE

Solid core wire consists of one single thick strand of wire.  Solid wire is more durable against the environment but tends to break easily and is not very flexible.  Electrical cables in your house would be made of solid core wire.

STRANDED CORE

Stranded core wire consists of many smaller thinner wires, braided or twisted together.  Stranded wire is flexible and would be used  in mouse cables, machines with moving parts, guitar patch cords or AC power cords.

 

Wire has an insulating cover made from plastic (which does not conduct electricity). Coaxial cable has two wires protected from each other by plastic.  This cable is used in TVs
