Petroleum extraction

The earliest recorded uses of petroleum date back to 4000 yrs. ago in Europe and Asia where surface seeps of heavy oil were used to create road material and wall building materials.  In ancient China, wells were drilled (347 A.D.) using metal tipped bamboo poles to depths of over 200 m..  Petroleum was put to  a variety of uses such as lighting and heating.
​ The modern oil industry began in the 19th. century.
Oil reserves were discovered in a number of regions world-wide.
