Where Plastics Come From

Most modern plastics are derived from petroleum.

This involves many costs to the environment.

Extracting the oil/gas/coal causes pollution and affects the landscape. Transporting the oil is risky.  Failures in the system results in expensive and often inadequate clean -up.

In 2013, a freight train carrying oil de-railed and exploded in Lac Megantic, Que.

The resulting fire resulted in 47 deaths.

Current oil spill clean-up technology is not efficient..

Modern technology is still not able to prevent spills and their consequences are poorly understood.
