Identifying non-ferrous (no iron content) metals

  • non-magnetic
  • no rust

Ferrous metals do not produce sparks when ground.  Use of a bench grinder should be avoided as the metals do not grind into particles, rather they coat the grinding wheel surface (making it in-effective).
 Do not grind non-magnetic metals.
Colour and hardness can often be used to identify non-ferrous metals..  Colour can only be seen on a freshly cut/filed/sanded surface..
